What's coming
Built for stairs. Nothing to fabricate.
Compliance built in
Engineered to NCC Part 11.3 (Barriers and Handrails), identical in NCC 2022 and NCC 2025, so the same kit complies in every state and territory.
- 1000mm tall upright clears the 865mm stair minimum by 135mm
- Largest stair gap 87.5mm, well inside the 125mm sphere test
- Plain vertical ovals: nothing to climb, no horizontal rails
- Not for pool fencing (AS 1926); certifier sign-off still required
Stair balustrade kits
Each tread takes a pair: one tall upright and one short adjustable (905–945mm) upright at the quarter points of the going. Fits any stair inside the NCC limits: rise 115–190mm and going 240–355mm.
- Optional hardwood top rail, cut to length (American Oak or Victorian Ash)
- Or fit your own timber or steel handrail to the brackets
Priced in two minutes, delivered in days
At launch, enter your number of steps, rise and going, and the kit builder prices the whole kit and generates a personalised layout sheet with every upright position. Install to it and you can't have an illegal gap.

The rules, in plain English
What the NCC requires on a stair.
NCC Part 11.3 sets the rules for barriers and handrails. These are the clauses that matter on a stair, and every Balustra kit is designed around them.
| NCC clause | What it requires |
|---|---|
| 11.3.3 | A continuous barrier wherever a fall of 1m or more is possible |
| 11.3.4(2) | Barrier height: 865mm on stairs, 1000mm on decks and landings |
| 11.3.4(4) | No opening may let a 125mm sphere pass |
| 11.3.4(8) | No climbable elements 150–760mm up where the fall exceeds 4m |
Common questions
Stair balustrade questions
How high does a stair balustrade need to be in Australia?
Under NCC Part 11.3, a barrier on a stair must be at least 865mm high, measured above the line of the stair nosings, wherever a fall of 1m or more is possible. Landings, floors and balconies need 1000mm. The Balustra tall upright is 1000mm before the top rail goes on.
What is the maximum gap in a stair balustrade?
No opening in the barrier may let a 125mm sphere pass through, and on stairs the gap is tested above the nosing line. Balustra uprights sit at the quarter points of every tread, so the largest gap is 87.5mm on the widest compliant tread.
Will the kit fit my stairs?
If your stair meets the NCC stair limits, yes: rise between 115 and 190mm, going between 240 and 355mm, and two risers plus one going (2R+G) between 550 and 700mm. Each tread takes one tall and one short adjustable upright, positioned at the quarter points of the going.
Does NCC 2022 or NCC 2025 apply to my project?
NCC 2025 applies in Victoria and Tasmania now, and in the ACT and Western Australia from 2027. NCC 2022 applies in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Part 11.3 is identical in both editions, so the same kit complies either way.
Can I install a stair balustrade kit myself?
Yes. The kit fixes with a drill and a tape, following a five-step checklist and a layout sheet that shows every upright position. Builders and carpenters install it without us on site, and so do homeowners. The certifier signs off the finished job either way.
Do you make a deck balustrade kit?
Not yet. A dedicated kit for decks, balconies and landings is in development. Register your interest in the deck kit section above and we'll tell you when it's ready.
